My Dear Parishioners,
 
I want to give you an update on our Hispanic ministry here at St. Anthony. This past Sunday was the second Sunday for our 1:15pm Sunday Spanish Mass with Fr. Juan Antonio. The crowds have been sizable---over 200 the first weekend alone. I am sure I speak for all of our St. Anthony family when I warmly welcome our Hispanic brothers and sisters to our parish.
 
We are a family parish with a sincere outreach especially to those who are new to our country and to the area. St. Anthony was founded in 1906 to provide a home for Italian who immigrated to this country in order to make a livelihood for their families and who had a deep desire to form a Catholic Community here on the Southside. One hundred plus years later, St. Anthony parish is once again opening its doors and its heart to those from other lands, particularly the Spanish speaking. We are delighted to have them share our home with us. Welcome.
 
There are still openings for Mass Intentions including this new 1:15pm Spanish Mass. Please call the business office at 244-4709 to schedule Mass Intentions for your Loved Ones.

Sunday May 23rd at 4pm we will begin the procession from St. Anthony‘s north parking lot. We will visit six altars in the neighborhood. The 1st Communion and Confirmation kids are asked to attend and dress up. All school children that attend will receive a Jean Day pass to be used only on Monday May 24th. The Dowling Catholic Brass Band, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Scottish Pipes and Drums, Des Moines Mounted Police along with many of the various groups of our parish.

Following the procession there will be a reception in the parish hall to honor this year‘s Pillars of the Parish. This year‘s honorees are Sister Cabrini Giacomuzzi, Victoria Cordaro, Bombina De Francisco, Helen Diers, Concetta Procopio, Joseph Cataldo, Sam Leto, Angelo Palmer, Mando Tonini and Joseph Tursi.

What a wonderful time to celebrate the great mercy our Lord has for each one of us.

This feast adds so much more meaning to the Easter celebrations. It was Jesus, Himself who asked for it to be celebrated on this particular Sunday following Easter.

There is a plenary indulgence attached to Divine Mercy Sunday as long as you do the following:

1. Begin the Divine Mercy Novena on Good Friday (See Attachment)
2. Go to Confession on Divine Mercy Sunday (10 priests are lined up on Divine Mercy Sunday) (See Attachment Below)
3. Say the Chaplet on Divine Mercy Sunday (See Attachment Below)
4. Receive Communion in a State of Grace (See Attachment Below)

Our Lord Jesus said to St. Faustina, "The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet.... Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy." (699) The plenary indulgence does not change the promises of Our Lord. Rather it provides the Church's highest mark of approval and endorsement.

Father Wade Menezes, C.P.M, Fathers of Mercy and Host of EWTN Series "The Crux of the Matter" will also be speaking on April 9th & 10th at Christ the King Church.

We recognize that all that we possess comes from God. We are God's stewards — we have been empowered to manage the abundant gifts that we have received.

Generations of faith filled Catholic people have passed on to us the most precious gift that we possess — the gift of faith. As this generation‘s "good stewards", we are obligated to pass on the gift of faith to our children.  As "good stewards" it is our responsibility to give back a portion of the time, talent and treasure we receive from our generous and loving God. As we begin a new year, let us recommit ourselves to the Lord by taking the time to plan and make stewardship of time and talent part of our lifestyle and stewardship of treasure part of our budget.

Children primarily learn through the examples of their parents. Today, many parents are volunteering their time and talents to their churches and community groups and bringing their children along with them. More and more churches are encouraging children to return a portion of their allowances or other income by putting children's envelopes in the collection basket.

It is extremely important that children are taught about stewardship. God has blessed us in so many marvelous ways. Stewardship is a way of life, a way for us to thank God for the myriad of blessings we have received by returning a portion of the time, talent and treasure allotted to us. "Everyone must give according to what he has inwardly decided; not sadly, not grudgingly, for God loves a cheerful giver." (2 Cor. 9:7)
Bishop Pates is encouraging people to contact their U.S. Representatives and Senators, encouraging them to support amendments to proposed health care reform bills that would protect the life of the unborn.  "We are at a critical moment in encouraging people to engage in the debate," said Bishop Pates.  Congress is preparing to debate health care reform legislation. The Catholic bishops of the United States strongly sup-port genuine health care reform that protects the life and dignity of all, from the moment of conception until natural death. However, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has concluded that none of the committee-approved bills retain long-standing current policies against abortion funding or abortion coverage mandates, none fully protects conscience rights in health care, and the bills do not yet provide adequate access to health care for immigrants and the poor.

"I encourage everyone to contact their U.S. Representative and Senators and urge them to fix these proposed bills with pro-life amendments. I also encourage people to pray for this critical effort," said Bishop Pates. "We can work together to make sure that health care reform is about saving lives." For many years, the U.S. Catholic bishops have supported health care for all based on the teaching that health care is essential for human life and dignity.

A: The essence of the Mass is not changing, but the way it is celebrated will be noticeably different. While the structure and order of the Mass will remain the same, many of the prayers and responses of the liturgy have been newly translated into English from the original Latin text. In addition, new observances for recently canon-ized saints, additional prefaces for the Eucharistic prayers, additional Masses for various needs and inten-tions, and updated instructions for the overall celebration of the Mass will be added. The most significant change people will notice, however, is the new translation of the actual words of the Mass.

We have begun our Lenten Pilgrimage together. We travel with the Savior along the way of the Cross---with our eyes ever fixed upon the empty tomb and the new life it offers us.

With that in mind, allow me to encourage the following spe-cial observances for Lent;

--Daily Mass

--Praying the Stations of the Cross on Friday at 5pm and the Fish Fry from 4-7pm on Fridays of Lent

--Participating in our special charity collections on the Sundays of Lent. This Sunday we are collecting for the Gabriel Pro-ject, next weekend we will collect for Bidwell Riverside Cen-ter. See the bulletin for more information.

--Daily quiet time for prayer—possibly visits to the church to spend time with the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. On Thurs-days we have exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in the Chapel in the lower level of the rectory—the former office. Stop by from 9am to 8pm.

--On Wednesday evenings at 6:30 a movie excerpt from the classic film ―Jesus of Nazareth‖ and a short discussion of the life of Christ.

Don‘t forget to abstain from meat on the Fridays of Lent—always bearing in mind the passion and death of Jesus—uniting our small sacrifices with His–especially for the healing and spiritual welfare of our loved ones.

Read-A-Thon is just around the corner! St. Anthony School will be hosting the 2nd Annual "Read-A-Thon Fundraiser" this year. The purpose of the fundraiser is to encourage children to read and instill in children reading is fun! This year‟s Read-A-Thon will be January 18th-28th, 2011. All proceeds from this event will be used to directly impact education at St. Anthony‟s School.

The Annual Read-A-Thon is an excellent opportunity to make a difference at St. Anthony‟s school. We are asking all parishioners to consider a cash donation or prize donation to our Read-A-Thon 2011.

St. Anthony‘s Foundation is sponsoring their own production. We are preparing the home previously occupied by the Priests of the Parish to be on the Market for Sale. The proceeds will be donated to the St. Anthony Foundation per the request of the Donor of the House.

On Saturday, Sept. 11th at 9am, we will have a blitz cleanup, restyle and Design to Sell. Volunteers are needed for landscaping, painting, installing light fixtures with minor electrical work, cleaning, minor carpentry, and power washing lots of this. Bring a power washer (we will need more than one for this job) also rakes, clippers and shovels for landscaping, cleaning supplies and buckets, carpentry tools, and anything else you can think of.

Children under 12 will not be able to work due to the liability.

We will take pictures of Before and After and submit them to the TV show De-signed to Sell on HGTV. Who knows you could be a TV Star!

Lunch and plenty of drinking water will be provided by the Foundation Board and their spouses.

House is located at 4101 SW 28th St. Directions: SW 31st south to Summit Vista Dr, turn left and go to SW 28th, turn left. House is n right hand side of street.

"To make Jesus Christ known and loved!" This is the goal of SA Religious Education

Program for children in grades K-8. The finest group of catechists help to support our parents in their task as the primary educators of their children. This year our catechists will make a public Oath of Fidelity, proclaiming that we will never teach or hand on anything to our students that is contrary to the teachings of the Church, always striving to live as Catholics in good standing. We will gather together monthly to pray for our students, their parents and our parish. At the beginning of this school year we will make an act of consecration, entrusting our year to our Blessed Mother.

On the first day of class parents will need to attend a meeting @ 10am in the school cafeteria. There you will receive your handbook, calendar and a brief summation of all activities and events that will take place during the school year. This meeting is mandatory and attendance will be taken.

Next weekend, September 11th-12th we will have pre-registration following all of the Masses. This is an opportunity for you to take care of business before classes begin on the 19th of September. Please make sure you enroll your children before the deadline of September 25th. A $25 late fee will be enforced. Also, please make sure you fill out your registration form completely, all three pages.

Parents enrolled in last years classes will receive via email a detailed letter regarding the upcoming school year. If you have changed your email address, please let me know right away so that you can receive all information regarding this school year.

Please pray for the success of our religious education program, our families and our students.
