If you have any of the equipment or games or supplies that we need please see Brother Dennis. Read on ---

Some people have al-ready given canning jars and canning supplies to make salsa, stewed tomatoes, chili sauce, pickles, banana peppers, pickled beets, relish etc. We still need the produce to do the canning. We have one gentleman who has volunteered to get us a bushel of Peppers. How great is that!!!

One person has some beads and figures that will be a big help, another person has stuffed animals. One thing that we asked for and is relatively inexpensive is the 2-liter bottles of soda. We use them as a ring- toss game and the winners get to keep the soda. Watch for an ad in supermarkets - pick some up and donate them. Along with that, we need cakes for the cake walk. Every year people come to the festival just for a certain delicacy that they know they will find here. It could be home-made pies, cakes, breads, rolls or cookies. You may or may not receive a call to commit to a donation for the bake sale; but make your own commitment to your-self and help us out. It is difficult to get people to volunteer to be on the calling list- thus the possibility of no one calling you. It isn‘t intentional, but it does hap-pen.

Urgent Message from Monsignor on Stewardship and PRO-LIFE Action!!!

Dear Parishioners,

We recognize that all that we possess comes from God. We are God's stewards — we have been empowered to manage the abundant gifts that we have received.

Generations of faith filled Catholic people have passed on to us the most precious gift that we possess — the gift of faith. As this generation‘s "good stewards", we are obligated to pass on the gift of faith to our children. As "good stewards" it is our responsibility to give back a portion of the time, talent and treasure we receive from our generous and loving God. As we begin a new year, let us recommit ourselves to the Lord by taking the time to plan and make stewardship of time and talent part of our lifestyle and stewardship of treasure part of our budget.

Children primarily learn through the examples of their parents. Today, many parents are volunteering their time and talents to their churches and community groups and bringing their children along with them. More and more churches are encouraging children to return a portion of their allowances or other income by putting children's envelopes in the collection basket.

It is extremely important that children are taught about stewardship. God has blessed us in so many marvelous ways. Stewardship is a way of life, a way for us to thank God for the myriad of blessings we have received by returning a portion of the time, talent and treasure allotted to us. "Everyone must give according to what he has inwardly decided; not sadly, not grudgingly, for God loves a cheerful giver." (2 Cor. 9:7)

Bishop Pates is encouraging people to contact their U.S. Representatives and Senators, encouraging them to support amendments to proposed health care reform bills that would protect the life of the unborn. "We are at a critical moment in encouraging people to engage in the debate," said Bishop Pates. Congress is preparing to debate health care reform legislation. The Catholic bishops of the United States strongly sup-port genuine health care reform that protects the life and dignity of all, from the moment of conception until natural death. However, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has concluded that none of the committee-approved bills retain long-standing current policies against abortion funding or abortion coverage mandates, none fully protects conscience rights in health care, and the bills do not yet provide adequate access to health care for immigrants and the poor.

"I encourage everyone to contact their U.S. Representative and Senators and urge them to fix these proposed bills with pro-life amendments. I also encourage people to pray for this critical effort," said Bishop Pates. "We can work together to make sure that health care reform is about saving lives." For many years, the U.S. Catholic bishops have supported health care for all based on the teaching that health care is essential for human life and dignity.

Comprehensive Health Care Reform

Bishop Pates has asked all the priests in the Des Moines Diocese to pass on this letter from Francis Cardinal George, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The U.S. Hose of Representatives has advanced major legislation to provide adequate and affordable health care to all. The Catholec Bishops of the United States have long advocated that adequate health care be made available to everyone. In an essential step, the House voted overwhelmingly to reaffirm the longstanding and widely supported precedent that no federal funds will be used to pay for elective abortions. In doing so, the Representative honored President Obamaa‘s commitment to the Congress and the nation that health care reform would not become a vehicle for expanding abortion funding or mandates. The conference will remain vigilant and involved throughout this entire process to as-sure that these essential provisions are maintained and included in the final legis-lation. We will work to persuade the Senate to follow the example of the House and include these critical safeguards in their version of health care reform legisla-tion. We also thank the members of the House who took this courageous and prin-cipled step to oppose measaures that would force Americans to pay for the de-struction of unborn children, and the Democratic leadership for allowing the Rep-resentatives to vote on this amendment that protects the common good.

In the national discussion on how to provide the best kind of health care, we bishops do not claim or present ourselves as experts on health care policy. We are not prpared to assess every provision of legislation as complex as this pro-posal. However, health care legislation, with all of its politcal, technical and eco-nomic aspects, is about human beings and hence has serious moral dimensions. Our focus is on the reality of families with children, the poor and the elderly, the mother carrying a child in her womb, those with limited or no means of access to doctors. Our Catholic commitment to health care picks up the pieces of our failing system in out emergency rooms, clinics, parishes and communities. All this under-girds our commitment that our nation‘s health care system needs reform which pro-tects human life and dignity and serves the poor and vulnerable as a moral im-perative and an urgent national priority.

We remain deeply concerned about the debate that now moves to the senate, expecialy as it will affect the poor and vulnerable, and those at the beginning and end of life. We will continue to insist that health care reform legislation must protect conscience rights. We support measures to make health care more afford-able for low-income people and the unisured. We remain deeply concered that immigrants be treated fairly and not lose the health care coverage that they now have. We will continue to raise our voices in public and in prayer; we ask our people to join us in making the moral case for genuine health care reform that protects the life, dignity, consciences and health of all.

Sincerely,

Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.

Dear Parish Family,

Thank you for caring enough to send your children to our Religious Education Program. The fact that you do, would seem to indicate your desire for your children to Know and Love Christ and the Church. It is our goal to aid you in that mission. In partnership we will be able to adequately prepare your children for the Sacraments and the tools necessary for them to live and defend their Catholic Faith.

There are expectations. I ask you to:

Attend Mass weekly and on Holy Days of Obligation(Sports and other activities cannot replace Holy Mass)

Support your child‘s learning by reading his/her lessons and participating in weekly homework assignments. Grades 1-5 will require a parent‘s signature to assure the homework has been completed under your supervision.

Attend classes regularly and be well prepared.

Support the total program with your prayers, time and energy.

Attend program functions and volunteer for one or more areas.(Volunteering is Mandatory)

Communicate ideas and questions. Any support or disagreements should be directed to your child‘s Catechist or to me.

Finally, read the PRE Webpage. All current information regarding this program can be found there. Pre-registration will be available after all the Masses on
September 5th & 6th. Above all, approach this year with your enthusiastic and prayerful support - that we may all grow in our Faith.

You remain in my prayers,
Pat Wadle, Director of Religious Education

The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) - PLEASE READ!!

The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) is set to be signed if congress passes it on Jan. 21-22 of 2009. If made a law then all limitations on abortion will be lifted which will result in the following:
1) All hospitals, including Catholic hospitals, will be required to perform abortions upon request.
2) Partial birth abortions would be legal and have no limitations.
3) All U.S. tax payers would be funding abortions.
4) Parental notification will no long be required.
5) The number of abortions will increase by a minimum of 100,000 annually. This is an estimation.

As Catholics, we are against the needless killing of innocent children, we must stand as one. We must stop this horrific act before it becomes a law.

The Plan:
To pray a novena (9 days of prayer) along with fasting starting on January 11th. For Catholics, the prayer of choice will be the rosary with intentions to stop the FOCA. For all other Christians, we encourage you to pray your strongest prayers with the same intentions, also for nine consecutive days. The hope is that this will branch and blossom as to become a global effort with maximum impact. We have very little time so we all must act fast.

Just do two things:
1) Start the novena on Jan. 11th and pray for nine consecutive days.
2) Please also fast for at least 2 days during the novena.

Remember that with God all things are possible and the power of prayer is undeniable.

A New Year's Message from Fr. Dooley

The calendar announces that the New Year is at hand. It is a time when many well intentioned people make resolutions for change in the year ahead. Some will give up food or drink, try to lose weight or try to be nicer in the New Year. And sadly by January 2nd many of the resolutions will be discarded like the paper hats and horns from the parties the day before. Yet, what does the New Year mean for the faithful Catholic? Well for one thing we believe that God‟s grace will be revealed in the coming year ahead, just as God grace was experienced in the years past. It means that we will journey closer to our heavenly home just as many of our family and friends went to sleep in the Lord leaving an emptiness in our hearts. The New Year promises each of us the presence of Christ to carry the cross daily and gives us hope for God‟s blessings. So let us today look forward with joy to the coming of the New Year. Let us be resolved to make the presence of Christ known, especially to the poor, to broken hearted, to all who need to hear Good News. It is our faith in Christ and the power of his Cross and resurrection that has changed the world and we, members of His holy Church, have a responsibility to claim the New Year of 2009 for Christ. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:20 May God‟s richness be yours in the New Year.

"O Come All Ye Faithful, Come let us adore Christ the Lord.‟ With these words we have begun to celebrate the Christmas season which lasts until the Feast of the Lord‟s baptism, Jan. 11th. Thanks so much to all who have worked to make this season another faith filled and joyful experience. I remember well my childhood Christmas celebrations here at St. Anthony‟s—the family spirit, the joyful voices singing the praises of the newborn king, the generous spirit, the concern and care for the needy, and the fun loving festivities that surround the feast. Time has flown by, changes have occurred but the heart and soul of St. Anthony‟s—and the family spirit—still to large measure remain intact. Praise God!!!

Particular thanks go to Mr. Nick Iaria and the team of parishioners who prepared the traditional St. Anthony crib scene. A lot of work went into reproducing the magnificent construction in the spirit of Mr. Ignazio Leto, the originator of our St. Anthony crib scene. Thanks too to those who helped decorate the hall for the Christmas Masses. It was beautiful as well.

To all who have sent cards, gifts, candies, cookies and sweets to the rectory, Fr. Dooley and I heartily thank you for remembering us at this time of year.

From all of us here at the parish offices and school, Fr. Dooley, our Deacons, parish staff and school administration, teachers and school staff to you and yours a blessed and Merry Christmas and Grace filled New Year
